SoftMaker Office for Pocket PCs - In an ideal world, you could create a Word or Excel document on your desktop PC, put it on your Pocket PC, edit and format it on the road, and then send it back to the office as a .DOC or .XLS file, with content and all formatting still intact.

Unfortunately, this is not how it works right now. Word Mobile, shipping with all Pocket PCs, is perhaps the biggest disappointment for mobile users: No headers or footers. No tables. No outliner. No on-the-fly spell-checking. Severely limited text formatting. No image support.

What about document conversion? As soon as you move a .DOC file to your mobile device, all features that Word Mobile cannot deal with are stripped and thrown away.

Excel Mobile doesn't fare much better: It supports just a quarter of the mathematical functions of Microsoft Excel and silently drops the rest when opening an Excel file. Carefully designed charts are reduced to pre-school drawings or thrown away completely. It does not support any drawing functions, AutoShapes or cell comments!

Now there is an alternative: In contrast to this "toy office", SoftMaker Office 2006 offers the full feature set of a modern office suite:

TextMaker: Multi-language spell-checker. Graphics and drawings in multiple formats. Footnotes and endnotes. Tables with built-in calculations. A full forms designer. "Track changes" and comments like in Word 2003. A full-fledged outliner. AutoText. And much, much more!

Outstanding - as advertized and more

Totally impressed with both products – Textmaker and Planmaker which I installed on my HP IPAQ 5915 PocketPC, I tried it because Mobile Word could not open MS Word password protected files. I have not yet tried out all the features, but here I mostly cite things I DIDN’T expect:

NO problem opening the password file I had previously downloaded, seems to have ALL the features of MSWord like tables, fonts, even a GOOD drawing program with features like lots of shapes and freehand, variable lines and colors, etc.- just like MS Draw. Same thing for Planmaker – it seems to cover Excel completely – all the equations (ie statistics, and technical ie Oct2Hex if you need it), cell borders and CUSTOM cell colors (like pick out from a continuous spectrum). PocketPC interface very good - Both programs work with all input systems (keyboard, transcriber, block), easy to zoom in and out to get more on page. Handles “lookup tables”, “Autoformat” brings up predesigned colored & titled tables just like excel.

Install of trial version was seamless and full function. Sees very fast – I notice no delays. I don’t recall ever trying a program that did everything as advertised and more. Would recommend to others download and try. I went ahead and purchased the whole suite including the desktop version.

Useful word processor

I was interested in a program for my Pocket PC which could open big MS Word files. SoftMaker Office for Pocket PCs does it. I find though that it does not reduce the length of files. I understand that for some users this could be an advantage. Not for me, given the small capacity of my Pocket PC. It works also a bit slow: to open a MS Word document 1 MB long takes about 1 minute. But this imperfections are more my Pocket PCвЂ™s than the SoftMaker OfficeвЂ™s. Thank you for the opportunity to test your good product.
